Carrie Tulbert

Carrie Tulbert has lived in this area since she was 8 years old and loves the changes that have occurred in Mooresville and Lake Norman. She is proud to have come “from” this area of North Carolina, and is honored that she and her children can call this “home”. She started her educational career in Mooresville, and it continues in Iredell County as a middle school principal. Her sons play baseball, and as a family they love hiking at Lake Norman State Park and date nights in Jetton Park in Cornelius. They enjoy “local” favorites like walking in downtown Mooresville, Pie in the Sky, and Epic Chophouse. Carrie also loves the thriving atmosphere and how it is constantly growing. In 2014, Carrie was awarded the North Carolina Principal of the Year award, and the travel and learning she experienced during that time enhanced her appreciation for Mooresville and Lake Norman even MORE as she learned more about our state.  Carrie feels blessed to be in this area!

Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.
I am a single mother and have 2 sons. My parents live in Mooresville, too.

Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
Oh my goodness… I’m an educator, and I could talk all day about this! I started my career at Lakeshore Middle School as a teacher, but I now serve as a middle school principal in Iredell-Statesville Schools at Northview IB School. What do I love the most? WOW! So many things! As a principal, I love making our school a safe and positive learning environment for our students. I love hiring teachers. I love helping teachers grow. I love setting up a mini-world for students to find success. I love seeing our kids smile. I love helping them in some of the most challenging formative years of their lives. I love the fact that I never know what each day will bring, from putting out fires to watching students celebrate to seeing drama performances to group presentations to students testing to impromptu parent conferences to zoom meetings to evaluations to changing policies to help kids. I could literally go on and on about how amazing education is, but especially, what principals do. No one really understands our job as school administrators, and it’s truly an amazing choice in education! I absolutely love “working” every day. I honestly don’t see it as a job; it’s a lifestyle choice. I am incredibly passionate about the role of the principal in today’s schools.

Q: What is your favorite restaurant in Lake Norman?*
Barcelona Burger! I love the vibe and all the plantlife outside as well as it’s interesting location. And of course, the burgers and beer.

Q: How long have you lived or worked in Lake Norman?*
I have lived in Mooresville since I was 8 years old! So I’m almost a native, and I consider this my home.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be?*
The West Coast…I’ve been blessed enough to travel to various parts of the world as an educator, but I’ve never been able to travel up and down the West Coast! I desperately want to take several weeks and see the beauties our own country has to offer, too.

Q: What advice would you give to people?
Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. But also, “What we do alone with our thoughts will decide what we do in public with other people.”

Q: What is something on your bucket list?

Q: Do you have any pets? Tell us about them!
I have a dog I adopted in November from Lake Norman Humane. She is a lab mix named SUNSHINE! And she’s truly our Sunshine! She’s all puppy at one year old, and she has brought great joy into our life!

Q: If someone was visiting Lake Norman for the first time, what’s one thing you would tell them they HAVE to do here on their trip?
I would recommend they go to Lake Norman State Park. Even though I’ve grown up in this area, as a single woman in my 40s, this has become a special place for me. There’s such a variety of things to do there, and it’s a peaceful way to enjoy the lake, too!

Q: What is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?*
I am very passionate about music; I played flute and have a degree in it! Music breathes life into my soul, and it’s a beautiful way to express all emotions!

Q: What is your favorite pizza topping?
Vegetables! But I also love chicken on pizza, too!

Q: Who inspires you to be better?
Jesus first and foremost. Then my 2 sons. I want to make the world a better place for them. And then my school, of which I love.

Q: Finally, what would be your #1 “wish list” feature for your dream house?
A room dedicated to simply being a library… I’m a book lover and I would love a room that has a wall simply of shelves for books.
